America Ferrera Does BlackBook Magazine

America Ferrera, an actress noted for her talent more than any of Hollyweird’s customary media-whoring ways, talks about her youth and paths of life travelled by her in the latest issue of BlackBook Magazine.

Staking out a career path, she was, at first, just as eager but clueless. In tenth grade, she geeked out and attended summer law camp. “We watched My Cousin Vinny,” Ferrera reports, “and I thought, I love this!”

But excitement faded after the realities of the profession sunk in—through a courthouse visit, a talk with a judge and a day at a legal library. “I thought, this is definitely not what I want to do.” International relations, another possible career, never quite took off.

Not to make it sound like the only reason we ought to support America is because she is a Latina, but still we’re kind of fortunate she never went into law or international relations.  Even though she certainly would have undoubtedly excelled in that as well.

But to have a Latina who doesn’t fit the stereotypical mold (like when J. Lo first burst on the scene) is rather refreshing.  She’s taken very different roles than most Latinas have in Hollywood.

And her body is lusciously healthy without her ever making a big deal out of it. Unlike Jennifer Love Hewitt releasing a statement, America doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.  And that right there, that’s true confidence.
